San Francisco, CA: San Francisco Community Health Center (SFCHC) hired Dr. Alisson Sombredero as Chief Medical Officer to address the growing health needs of San Francisco’s homeless, marginally housed, and LGBTQ communities impacted by substance use and mental illness. SFCHC has become the health care safety net for those who fall out of the traditional health care system. Dr. Sombredero’s unique experience, her HIV expertise, and her commitment to marginalized and stigmatized communities ensure that SFCHC will continue to provide the highest quality medical and behavioral health care for everyone who comes through our doors and who our team reaches on the street. SFCHC is committed to providing a whole person approach to support clients with their multi-layered and complex needs.
Dr. Sombredero is a physician hailing from Bogota, Colombia where she completed her medical training at La Universidad de La Sabana. She developed a special interest in HIV medicine during her early clinical years while in medical school where she was able to experience the heartbreaking HIV epidemic in Colombia when HIV treatment was not available. Dr. Sombredero came to the San Francisco Bay Area to specialize in Internal Medicine. Her residency training at Highland Hospital (Oakland, CA) and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital made her acutely aware of the struggles that many vulnerable populations have to deal with when living with HIV, in particular to the stigma that directly impacts retention in care and adherence to treatment.
“We are overjoyed to have Dr. Sombredero on the SFCHC team,” said Lance Toma, San Francisco Community Health Center’s CEO. “I am inspired by Dr. Sombredero’s passion for this work. Her incredible depth of medical and community experience will not only benefit our clients but contribute to our City’s efforts to address the issues of homelessness, substance use, and mental illness through an LGBT-competent health care practice.”
