What was the experience of running through the series like?
I honestly looked forward to each week’s session! After each session, I felt like I had learned new things about myself and interacting with others. It was very validating, rewarding, and honestly therapeutic, to be seen, heard, and to learn in a situation where my whole identity was being acknowledged. I felt like I was gaining a lot of valuable knowledge, while being totally respected as an individual and in my identity. I feel that Xochitlquetzal did a great job facilitating these sessions, especially online; it is difficult to make people feel included via online sessions, but I felt that Xochitlquetzal acknowledged everyone’s thoughts and feelings, and did very well at including everyone who wanted to input during discussions. Xochitlquetzal also did a great job of accountability when they made a mistake, which was very refreshing to see from a leader, especially in a health/communication environment.
What was the initial draw?
I was very interested to see what the sessions might be composed of, and how they would be run via Zoom. I was very excited to be a part of a study that would help improve the healthcare experience of other marginalized individuals.
What have been some key takeaway(s)?
I learnt a lot about myself (how I act in a conflict, why, what may be causing those reactions), how others might act/react and why, how to successfully navigate difficult conflicts (remove yourself if conflict is unresolvable, or what options there are to resolve the conflict), how to be a better communicator, how to be a better listener. All extremely valuable skills.
Would you recommended this series and why?
I would 100% recommend this series. I learned a lot of new things, about myself, other people, human relationships, conflict-resolution, from an interpersonal perspective and from a more technical perspective. It was really interesting and valuable experience for me. I feel honoured to have participated. Xochitlquetzal is a truly wonderful teacher.
