Black History Month Programming

In honor of Black History Month, clients are encouraged to participate in several activities occurring throughout the month of February. Activities have been designed to align with this year’s theme of “Seeing Us” at SFCHC.

Community Altar: Whether it be a picture, art piece or simply a message of love, clients and staff are invited to contribute to our community altar in the Audre Lorde Community Room and acknowledge ancestors that have passed on.

Afternoon Media Screenings: Every Monday in the Audre Lorde Community Room, you will find a Blackmedia piece (i.e., film, TV, online video) that speaks to themes of Black Health &HIV Awareness; Civil Rights; BlackBeauty; & Black Cultural Impact.

Visibility Walls - Black Education & Trailblazer Collage: Displayed along the walls, you will find art pieces that highlight education and its role in Black progress; a history of Black medical institutions; and a collage highlighting both Black historical trailblazers and the families of both our staff and clients.

Weekly Friday Meals: When it comes to Black identity and culture, food plays a large role in the protection and continuance of stories & tradition that go back generations. It tells a story of creativity and resilience. Each Friday, clients will get a snapshot of this through weekly lunches:

  • Friday, February 2nd: Red Beans & Rice | Pork Chops | Cornbread

  • Friday, February 9th: Turkey Wings | Green Beans | Mashed Potatoes

  • Friday, February 16th: Chicken & Sausage Gumbo | Cornbread

  • Friday, February 23rd: Jerk Chicken | Yellow Rice | Fried Cabbage
