In Loving Memory of Philanthropist, Activist, and Luminary Ambassador James C. Hormel, 1933-2021

When I learned about the passing of Jim Hormel, I was incredibly devastated and heartbroken. Words can’t begin to express the depth and breadth of courage, passion, commitment, vision, and power that Jim possessed and emanated. He was a true gentleman, and anyone who was fortunate enough to cross his path will attest to this. He was funny and brilliant and kind and abundantly generous.
As our country’s first openly gay US Ambassador in 1999, Jim blazed a trail that cut right through the bitter homophobia that dared to challenge his confirmation. His political and philanthropic impact has already left an indelible mark on our queer movement. The LGBTQ community owes a debt of gratitude to Jim.
From our days as Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center to our evolution into San Francisco Community Health Center, Jim was there every step of the way, cheering us on and supporting and believing in our work.
The community of San Francisco Community Health Center is sending our aloha and condolences to Jim’s husband Michael and all of his family and loved ones.
And to our dearest friend Jim – may you rest gently and sweetly in peace and power. Your legacy will shine forever brightly here in San Francisco and around the world.
