San Francisco Community Health Center is thrilled to honor Toni Newman as our Health Justice Champion at this year’s Show of Hope Gala on Friday, April 18th at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco.
Toni is a celebrated author, advocate, and inspirational figure whose life and work have left an indelible mark on the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Dedicating her life to advocacy and service, Toni has worked tirelessly with organizations supporting LGBTQ+ rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, and homelessness, particularly within marginalized communities. She is currently the Director of The Coalition for Justice and Equality Across Movements at NMAC in Washington, D.C., and Chair of the Board of Directors for TransCanWork.
In San Francisco, Toni’s work has touched the lives of many of our community members, ensuring that the most vulnerable among us are seen, heard, and supported. She has held leadership roles at the SF LGBT Center, LYRIC, St. James Infirmary, and Maitri, and was one of the founding members of the Black Leadership Council of California.
Toni is also an acclaimed author. Her groundbreaking memoir, I Rise: The Transformation of Toni Newman, (2011), is a powerful and candid account of her journey as a transgender woman navigating love, identity, and societal challenges. Through her writing, Toni has become a vital voice in the fight for transgender visibility and acceptance. In 2025, her second book, Living My Authentic Life in an Unapologetic World, will be released.
